DATES: 6/12/23 - 6/16/23
TIME: 10:00am to 3:00pm
CAMP LOCATION: Berkeley, CA

Do you love movies? Do you wonder what they look like when they are just words on the page? Are you curious to learn how you could write your own screenplay?

Welcome to the camp where creativity meets the structure of screenwriting. Discover what makes a good story and the stages of the hero’s journey. Learn how this structure is found in nearly every film from the Marvel Universe to other popular films. Students will learn the craft of creating a narrative that they can utilize when writing any paper, presentation, or college application essay. We will watch movies, eat popcorn, read scripts and analyze storytelling techniques. Through guided writing exercises, students will freely put their ideas on paper without dwelling on perfection. In addition to story structure, we will focus on world building, character development and dialogue.

Students will mold their stories and characters into scenes for their own short film script. The camp will be small enough for all students to receive plenty of individualized feedback. This class is perfect for movie enthusiasts, aspiring filmmakers, and writers at all levels.

The camp is taught by Mitch Costanza, a working screenwriter, actor, and filmmaker. He teaches an advanced screenwriting class at an Oakland charter school.
